Program Overview

The Downtown Sign Grant Assistance Program aims to enhance the visual appeal of downtown Mineral Wells by supporting local businesses in improving or installing exterior signage. This program provides matching contributions to encourage investment in signage that aligns with the community's aesthetic and historical character.

Equal to the Assistance amount (e.g., if awarded $2,000, the business must contribute $2,000)

Eligibility Criteria

The Mineral Wells Main Street Sign Reimbursement Assistance Program is set up as a single payment reimbursement to property owners per building/business, or tenants with written landlord approval. Contributions are available on a 50/50 matching basis with a cap of up to $2,000 per sign ($4,000+ total project). Assistance funds focus on signs which may include signboards, projecting signs, pedestrian signage (hanging sign and awning sign) for commercial buildings located in the Downtown Historic District boundary.

No funding will be awarded for work that has already been done. All work submitted must be reviewed and approved by the City Permitting Office (Inspections and Compliance Division), and reviewed by the Mineral Wells Main Street Advisory Board before any eligible work may begin. If awarded a Downtown Sign Assistance fund, any deviation from the approved project may result in the total or partial withdrawal of the funding. 1. Business Type:

  • Must be a legally established brick and mortar business located within the downtown Historic district of Mineral Wells.
  • If the applicant is a tenant and not the legal property owner, written approval from the property owner must be provided via the “Landlord Approval Form for Downtown Sign Assistance Program” with a copy of lease agreement including terms of lease.
  • Map of downtown boundary is attached to end of the application.

2. Signage Requirements:

  • New signage or improvements to existing signage must be visible from the street and comply with local zoning regulations.
  • Signs must enhance the character of the downtown area and reflect the historical context of Mineral Wells. Sign Assistance is for exterior signs only.
  • All signs must be approved through the City of Mineral Wells permits division (a sign permit must be pulled through the City and be approved and permitted) and approved by the Main Street Advisory Board. The city permitting process will need to be complete before the Downtown Sign Grant Assistance Program Selection.
  • All Downtown Sign Grant Assistance applications must include a scale drawing/s by the applicants’ sign company including the proposed work, as well as installation details. Color samples of all final paint colors and sign material (substrate) must be included with the application to be reviewed by the Downtown Economic Vitality & Design Committee (Advisory Board). Applicants must also obtain a written proposal from sign company including installation of sign(s), cost, design and materials. Selfcontracted work will be reimbursed for actual legitimate expenses, excluding labor.

Application Process

1. Application Submission:

  • Interested businesses must complete an application form, which includes:
    • Business name, address, and contact information.
    • Brief description of your business
    • Lease terms (attach copy of lease)
    • The completed application form with all original contract proposals, color samples and sign material for the proposed work, including the company completing the sign design, creation and installation.
    • Budget detailing costs for materials and installation.
    • All application materials must be returned to the Mineral Wells Main Street office at 107 N Oak Ave, Mineral Wells, TX 76067.

2. Timeline for Applications:

  • Applications will be reviewed by the Downtown Economic Vitality & Design Committee prior to the Main Street Board Meeting each month.

3. Review Process:

  • Applications will be reviewed by the Economic Vitality & Design committee of the Main Street Advisory Board.
  • All Sign Reimbursement projects must meet current building standards (Standard Building Codes) and sign ordinance and go through all proper City of Mineral Wells approvals.
  • Criteria for selection include:
    • Potential impact on local business visibility and appeal.
    • Quality and creativity of the proposed signage.
    • Compatibility with the downtown aesthetic.

Award Notification

Selected applicants will be notified within 30 days of receipt.

Recipients must sign funding agreement outlining terms of Sign Grant Assistance Fund.

Post-Funding Requirements

1. Completion of Project:

  • Signage projects must be completed within 6 months of receiving approval.

2. Documentation:

  • Recipients must submit proof of project completion, including receipts and photos of the finished signage. Reimbursement will be given upon inspection at the end of project completion.

3. Promotional Requirements:

  • Recipients may be asked to participate in promotional activities, such as social media features, press releases, or community events.
